Isaac Riegler (McLean, Ill./Olympia) turned in an 11-strikeout complete game in the nightcap to help the Carl Sandburg College baseball team split a doubleheader with Illinois Central on Thursday at the William “Bill” Hungate Baseball/Softball Complex.
GAME 1
Illinois Central 6, Sandburg 0
Ill. Central 002 002 2 — 6 7 0
Sandburg 000 000 0 — 0 3 3
L: Mann 5 IP, 6 K, 3 BB
Key Moment
A pair of run-scoring fielder’s choices in the third inning provided all the runs ICC would need in the opener as the Chargers were held to three hits.
Sandburg Standout
Chargers starter Tuner Mann (Metamora, Ill./Metamora) allowed a pair of runs on four hits and three walks in five innings. Mann fanned six Cougars in the outing.
GAME 2
Sandburg 7, Illinois Central 3
Ill. Central 000 000 3 — 3 4 2
Sandburg 002 023 x — 7 9 1
W: Riegler 7 IP, 11 K, 2 BB
Key Moment
Up 2-0 in the fifth, the Chargers got some breathing room when an ICC error plated Ben Higgins (Macomb, Ill./Macomb), who led off the inning with a base hit. Sam Scott (Deer Creek, Ill./Deer Creek-Mackinaw) followed with a single to center to drive in Caileb Johnson (Brimfield, Ill./Brimfield) for a 4-0 lead.
Sandburg Standout
Riegler turned in a dominant start, striking out a career-high 11 batters while allowing just four hits and two walks in going in the distance. Sixty-seven of hit 107 pitches were for strikes. A three-run home run with two outs in the seventh was all that prevented him from earning a shutout.
Other Top Chargers
- Higgins 3 for 4, three runs
- S. Scott 2 for 3, walk, two RBIs
